I trust you are now familiar with the equation (a + b)2 = a2 +2ab + b2, but let’s do the calculation again, in longhand form:

Can we detect a general pattern in this? Could we predict the answer for (a + b)4 from the pattern?

First, notice that lines (1) and (2) have the same sequence of coefficients 1,2,1 which were the coefficients for (a + b)2. Also, line (2) is shifted one position to the left. Keeping track of only these coefficients, the pattern is:
